Inspector Cris Cunningham started her law enforcement career with the Oklahoma City Police Department in 1992. She has worked in various positions on the department, including patrol, community relations, public information office and investigations.
While working in the community relations unit, Insp. Cunningham implemented a program about gun education in the Oklahoma City Public School system. The program was a two (2) day event partnering the local district attorney and local first responders to educate young people about the reality of gun violence.
During her time in the Investigations Bureau, Insp. Cunningham was assigned to the Child Abuse, Assault and Homicide Units. She is currently serving in her eleventh (11th) year as a homicide investigator.
Inspector Cunningham is an instructor for her agency. She teaches classes to the Recruit Academy, Leadership Development, Citizens Academy and Student Academy. She also holds advanced instructor standing with the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (C.L.E.E.T.), the state agency responsible for certification of law enforcement officers. Cris has provided instruction for Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
In addition to serving her community as an officer, Cris enjoys participating with citizens as a representative of the police department. She has served as a mentor for the H.O.S.T.S (Help Our Students to Succeed) program. She currently serves as a committee member for Positives Tomorrow, a school for the homeless children of Oklahoma City.
Inspector Cunningham has served as a member of the Oklahoma City Police Department Honor Guard. She served for over ten years on the Oklahoma City Police Association board.
Cris received the inaugural Ina Mae “Tiny” Miller award at the 2015 NAWLEE Conference in Hartford, CT. The award was based on her work related to the CARETRAK program recently implemented by the Oklahoma City Police Department.
Inspector Cunningham has a Bachelor’s Degree in Law Enforcement Administration from the University of Oklahoma. She has been a NAWLEE member since 2011 and has attended every annual conference since she became a member.
