About the Role:

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the nation’s second largest school district, is seeking a law enforcement/public safety professional to join our school police department management team as a Deputy Chief of Police.

Established in 1948, the Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD) is proud of their standing as one of the leading and the largest school district police departments in the nation.  The LASPD also shares jurisdiction and interacts with over 13 municipal and county law enforcement agencies (to include multiple outside agency divisions and stations), as well as state and federal law enforcement and emergency services agencies. The current operating budget is over 55 million dollars.

The ideal candidate for the Deputy Chief of Police will have a demonstrated professional commitment to the field of law enforcement/public safety. This individual’s career path will show a successful progression of professional law enforcement career development including management-level experience in the areas of field operations, community policing, risk management/threat assessment, and administrative operations.

The ideal candidate will also have a proven record of accomplishments managing sworn personnel within a large and geographically diverse law enforcement department. He/she must be able to lead others by example. Ideally, he/she will have demonstrated their commitment to leadership by successfully completing a recognized leadership development program such as those offered by the Supervisory Leadership Institute, Command Development, Command College, or the FBI National Academy. He/she will understand the unique needs of providing school safety for a K-12 school district and have a proven track record of the successful implementation of law enforcement’s “best” and “next” practices.


Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree.  Additional qualifying experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the required education provided that graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency is met.

Two years of experience as a Lieutenant with the District or four years of sworn officer experience in a management position in a law enforcement agency within the last five years.
