A national search is underway to attract an exceptionally well-qualified individual to lead the Pensacola Police Department (PPD). Pensacola is the westernmost city in the Florida Panhandle and has a population of 52,975. While this is an incredible opportunity to lead one of Florida’s top law enforcement agencies, this moment comes at a time of historic national social awakening about systemic racism, the role of police, political upheaval and division, and a worldwide pandemic. Appointed by the elected Mayor, the Chief of Police is responsible for police department’s relationship with the entire community and the overall leadership, culture, performance, and efficiency of the department. With a budget of $20 million, 141 sworn officers and 53 civilian employees working in one of five divisions, the selected candidate must be ready to provide contemporary police expertise with an approach that builds authentic relationships in the community. The Chief will champion the great work of staff while ensuring the implementation of best practices that are appropriate in a modern, progressive police department. The most competitive candidates for the Chief of Police position will possess at least 10 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, five (5) of which, in a supervisory capacity. Candidates should have a proven and demonstrated track record of working effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse community, including developing and implementing innovative crime reduction and community policing strategies. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is qualifying. A Master’s degree or advanced executive training such as the FBI National Academy, Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) – Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) are considered a plus. The salary for this at-will position is $103,022 – $164,819 annually, with placement depending on qualifications, salary history and accomplishments. Compensation will be augmented by an excellent benefits package. For optimal consideration, candidates are encouraged to apply early, as the first review of candidates will be on March 31, 2021. Interested parties should submit a compelling cover letter, comprehensive resume, and list of references to apply@publicsectorsearch.com. Only the most highly qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the selection process starting in April 2021.
