Miami University (Miami) is seeking a student-centered, forward-looking, and experienced campus police or public safety leader to serve as its next chief of police. The expected start date is summer 2021.

Covering a three square-mile area, Miami’s main campus is located in Oxford, Ohio, 35 miles north of Cincinnati. With over 21,000 residents, and named ‘The Best College Town’ in the United States by Forbes magazine in 2014, Oxford features a wide variety of shops and restaurants within walking distance of the main campus. Additional regional campuses are located in Hamilton, Middletown, and the Voice of America Learning Center in West Chester, Ohio.
Reporting to the senior vice president for finance and business services, the chief of police (chief) provides strategic and operational leadership to the Miami University Police Department including patrol operations, community policing, investigations, parking enforcement, technical services, dispatch and communications, crime prevention, special events, and emergency response for the entire university.
The chief is responsible for the overall planning, development, and implementation of a comprehensive and dynamic public safety and law enforcement program at Miami University; upholds a strong departmental commitment to the university’s mission; promotes collaborative and respectful relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the City of Oxford; ensures proper and adequate coverage by police department staff for all athletic and special events; and maintains open and continuous communication with senior leadership and City of Oxford Police Department to keep them apprised of actual and potential risks.
This senior leader works closely with university communications colleagues and serves as a spokesperson for the university on public safety, law enforcement, emergency management, and security matters. The chief provides leadership for a team comprising 22 sworn officers, six communications specialists, and three civilian staff and manages approximately a $10 million budget covering both public safety and the university’s transportation auxiliaries. The Miami University Police Department is certified by and a participating agency in the Ohio Collaborative for Community-Police Relations.
A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field coupled with significant experience in a management level position within a public safety or law enforcement organization are required. A master’s degree, experience working with a diverse campus population, and leadership experience in an institution of higher education’s police or public safety department are strongly preferred.
Miami University is particularly interested in candidates who have completed an executive leadership certification program and possess extensive knowledge of federal, state and local laws, policies and procedures that promote campus security; experience in and considerable knowledge of the concept of community policing; and strong customer service skills. A criminal background check and the ability to obtain a certification as a State of Ohio Peace Officer are also required.
