The City of Gladstone, Missouri is seeking an experienced and innovative leader in law enforcement to serve as its next Chief of Police. This is an outstanding opportunity to live and work in Gladstone, Missouri, a first-tier suburb of Kansas City, Missouri. Gladstone is a community of nine square miles with approximately 27,000 residents and over 11,000 households. Gladstone’s citizens and businesses experience the conveniences of a big city with the closeness and atmosphere of a small town. The community’s convenient access to Downtown Kansas City as well as its proximity to Kansas City International Airport, provides significant economic and strategic advantages to the City. As a part of its continuing commitment to excellence, the city is seeking an extremely well-qualified individual to become its first Police Chief as the city transitions from its current Public Safety model. The selected individual will be appointed by the City Manager to manage and direct the daily operations of law enforcement.
The Gladstone Police Department is staffed with 50 Police Officers, and 18 full-time and 2 part-time civilians supported by an annual operating budget of approximately $6 million. Other services provided to the public include the operation of a shelter for the adoption of stray animals. Civilian employees provide communications, animal control, records, and clerical support. Under the general direction of the Assistant City Manager for Emergency Services, the new Chief of Police will plan, direct and manage all activities and operations of the City of Gladstone’s Police Department. The new Chief of Police will be expected to reside within the city limits of the City of Gladstone within a reasonable time after appointment.
The successful candidate should possess the knowledge and competency associated with the completion of a Bachelors’ degree in a course of study related to the public safety field. A Masters’ degree or equivalent relevant certifications is preferred. Further, the selected individual should possess at least seven to ten years of law enforcement leadership experience in a community of comparable size and/or complexity to thoroughly understand, direct and coordinate the diverse objectives and functions of the Police Department. The City and the Police Department place a very high priority on customer service and desire a Chief of Police who will continue that philosophy. The selected candidate should be experienced with and knowledgeable about community-oriented policing.
The salary range for the position is $80,131 to $132,937 and the starting salary will be market competitive and depend on the experience and qualifications of the selected individual. A vehicle is provided; other benefits include employer contributions toward health, dental and vision. The City participates in the LAGERS (“L6 non-employee contributory”) retirement program with a five-year vesting requirement.
