Commissioned Law Enforcement Position
This is an exciting opportunity to live and work in an innovative and growing oceanfront city in South Carolina. With its nine miles of sandy ocean beach, North Myrtle Beach is part of the South Carolina’s vibrant “Grand Strand.” The City of North Myrtle Beach is comprised of approximately 17 ½ square miles with a year around population of 16,000+ residents. That number swells to approximately 35,000+ during daily working hours and swells to over 100,000+ during our tourist season. Tourism is our primary industry and we are known for our hospitable family beach atmosphere, nine miles of wide beaches, a wide variety of shopping opportunities, championship 18-hole golf courses, restaurants, entertainment and amusement offerings, ocean fishing and much more.
The City of North Myrtle Beach Department of Public Safety is a full service public safety department comprised of certified cross-trained police officers, certified cross-trained firefighters, certified dispatchers/jailers, certified animal control officers, and a variety of civilian staff.
The Chief of Police, under limited supervision, will manage, direct, and coordinate the activities of police services while exercising responsibility for enforcement of state and local laws relating to public safety. The Chief of Police performs administrative duties such as preparing a budget, controlling expenditures, drafting policies and procedures, conducting investigations and other related tasks. The Chief of Police will supervise the activities of Police Command Staff, Uniform Patrol, Detectives, Communications/Detention, Records, and Community Services. The Chief of Police will work in coordination with our Fire Chief. The Chief of Police reports directly to the Director of Public Safety.
Negotiable Based on Experience
The ideal candidate for the position of Chief of Police should possess a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university with a major in Criminal Justice, Public/Business Administration or related field. The successful candidate should have a minimum of ten or more years of progressively responsible management experience in local government holding the rank of police captain or above. The successful candidate may possess any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. A related Master’s degree and graduation from SPI and/or the FBI Academy is preferred.
The ideal candidate for the position of Chief of Police must bring a flexible “can-do” approach to our City. Must be a strong, open communicator both internally and externally. Have the ability to promote the vision, direction, and values of our Public Safety Department to both internal and external stakeholders. Shall possess excellent leadership and management skills to include collaborative problem solving. Be a positive representative of our Public Safety Department and City. Develop strong partnerships with community, civic groups and business leaders.
Successful candidate must possess a South Carolina Class I Law Enforcement certification or ability to obtain within one year of appointment.
Successful candidate must possess a South Carolina valid driver license or ability to obtain within 90 days of appointment.
Residency requirement – the Chief of Police must reside full time within the City of North Myrtle Beach within 12 months of appointment date. Relocation expenses may be negotiated as appropriate.
